How to choose the right wall-mounted heat pump system for your home?

It is important to know that not all wall-mounted heat pumps are of the same quality. It is crucial to choose the right heat pump system for your home and the climate.

Here are some important points to keep in mind before choosing your heat pump.

When making a decision, it is important to consider the size and location of the space. This will ensure that you have enough airflow to keep the temperature at the desired level.

When making a decision, it is also important to consider how the space will be used as well as its level of sunlight.

Insulation

Insulation plays a crucial role. Insulated homes are more efficient at maintaining temperature and use less energy. Insulation can have an immediate impact on the efficiency of your system.

SEER

The seasonal energy efficiency ratio, also known as SEER, tells you how much heat your wall-mounted heat pump uses. A heat pump that uses less energy will have a higher SEER.

The wall-mounted heat pump system

The wall-mounted heat pump system consists of two main units: the head (diffuser) and the heat pump.

The head is the part attached to the wall inside your home and the heat pump is the unit located outside your home. Note that there are different sizes and powers of heat pumps depending on the power required for the space to be heated and cooled.

The wall-mounted heat pump is often chosen by condo and homeowners for its quick installation and low cost. Compared to a central heat pump, virtually any home can accommodate this solution.

In comparison, to install a central heat pump in an existing home, you need to install ventilation ducts through the walls of the house. Obviously, this solution requires major work.

This is why many homeowners opt for a wall-mounted heat pump. We install the compressor on the outside and the ventilation head(s) on the inside walls. It is possible to install up to 3 wall units per compressor. In multi-storey homes, it is recommended to have one unit per floor to ensure optimal performance and generate greater savings!

*The installation of a wall-mounted heat pump generally takes less than 3 hours.

Main advantages :

  • Reduces electrical consumption for heating/cooling
  • Quick and less expensive installation
  • Long life span
  • Controls humidity in the home
  • Quickly heats and cools room air
  • Quiet (19 to 40 decibels indoors and 46 to 58 decibels outdoors)

Yes, a poorly maintained system can use up to 25% more electricity. That’s why it is recommended to do at least an annual maintenance to thoroughly clean the parts of the wall unit and the compressor. For optimal efficiency, we recommend 1 maintenance in the fall and 1 in the spring.

Proper installation of your wall-mounted heat pump is essential to ensure its proper operation, but even more important to honour the manufacturer’s warranty.

Many people choose to install their wall-mounted heat pump themselves or have it installed by an unqualified contractor. If a problem occurs, before honoring the warranty, the manufacturer will ask you for proof of installation by a qualified and licensed contractor.

Through our years of experience, premature appliance failure is very often caused by poor installation.

Save yourself headaches, money and time by having your wall mounted heat pump installed by a licensed professional.

It is important to evaluate the number of BTUs you will need to heat and cool your home in an optimal way. All DuraClim consultants will be able to help you choose the right system for your specific needs and budget.

Here is a rough chart of the recommended number of BTUs depending on the space to be covered.

500 to 900 square feet – 12,000 BTUs

900 to 1500 square feet – 18 000 BTU

1500 to 2000 square feet – 24 000 BTU

*Note that it is also common to install two smaller units in a multi-storey home. For example, a 12,000 BTU unit on the first floor and a second 12,000 BTU unit on the second floor.

Wall-mounted heat pump systems do not require ductwork and can therefore be used in homes that do not already have a ventilation system. This is an excellent option for home expansion projects where extending existing ductwork is not possible or too expensive.

Wall-mounted heat pumps can also be used in larger multi-storey homes. Because larger homes require more energy, they can be more expensive to cool/heat. However, homeowners who only temper the areas they use can save a lot of money on their electric bills. For example, one person may like it cooler in the kitchen while the other prefers it warmer in their bedroom. These larger homes can benefit from a heat pump system that offers greater control and flexibility as well as savings.

Wall-mounted heat pump : THE ESSENTIAL

With a wall-mounted heat pump system, your air conditioning/heating is handled with two main pieces: an indoor air handler and an outdoor compressor/condenser.

The indoor air handler is typically mounted high on a wall or ceiling. These units can be covered with custom-made covers or purchased to blend in perfectly with your home’s interior design. Wall-mounted units are connected to the outdoor compressor directly through a coolant line, rather than through cumbersome and complicated venting systems.

The wall unit must also be supplied with electricity. A power cord connects the indoor unit and outdoor compressor directly to your home’s electrical panel. There is also a drain to remove condensate.

A house usually has several indoor wall units connected to the outdoor heat pump compressor. Each indoor wall unit can be controlled separately and can heat or cool depending on the needs of the area. However, they all use the same outdoor compressor.

This is a very different way compared to the traditional central heat pump system. The wall-mounted heat pump system is the most cost-effective option if there is no space for ductwork.

Do wall-mounted heat pump systems heat and cool at different temperatures in each zone?

Yes, each wall unit heats or cools a specific area and is connected to an outdoor unit. Before installation, we’ll help you determine the best layout to ensure optimum comfort in each room of your home.

It’s usually pretty simple. You can connect up to four wall units per compressor. The square footage of your home, as well as its heating and cooling needs, will determine how many outdoor and indoor units you need.

An example of a typical wall-mounted heat pump installation for a two-story home would be one wall-mount in the garage and two wall-mount on the second floor. The second floor has two murals on opposite sides. So you can heat/cool the second floor more during the day and then reverse at night to heat/cool the bedrooms more. This allows you to have better control over your consumption and save on electricity.

Wall-mounted heat pumps don’t need vents, so you don’t have to worry about air loss through duct joints. Cracks and gaps in the air ducts can cause up to 30% loss of conditioned air, even in a well-sealed system. This occurs more often when ducts pass through crawl spaces and attics, or when a duct is closed off to a specific room.

Can wall-mounted heat pump systems cool and heat year-round?

The answer to this question is more complex and requires us to discuss the technical differences between heat pumps and traditional furnaces. But let’s keep it simple: wall-mounted heat pumps can not only cool, but also heat your home the majority of the year. One of our comfort specialists will be happy to help you understand the details of how it works compared to other methods.

Wall-mounted heat pump systems: Potential advantages and disadvantages

Wall-mounted heat pump systems can be used for large homes, multi-story homes and buildings that do not have existing ductwork. You can choose to cool only the rooms you use with your thermostatically controlled unit. This saves money compared to a central system where it is more difficult to choose zones.

However, a wall-mounted heat pump system may not be the best option for your situation. If you have a single-story home with an existing ductwork system, a central heat pump system is probably a better option. It will save you money and be easier to install.

The bottom line is that the initial cost of a wall-mounted heat pump is generally lower than that of central systems, and your operating costs will be lower. While indoor units are not for everyone, there are many options and wall-mounted designs that can match your existing design.

Advantages of the wall-mounted heat pump

  • The units are space saving

  • Installation is easy when performed by a qualified technician

  • Zone heating/cooling is flexible and easy to use

  • Remote operation and smart options available

  • Heats and cools

  • Modern appearance

  • Energy efficient

  • No ductwork, no air leakage

  • Many customization options available (covers, installation options, etc.).

  • Tends to have a longer lifespan than the central heat pump.
