How do you choose the right heating system for your building?
It’s important to understand that not all heating systems are created equal. You need to choose a heating system that’s right for your home and for Quebec’s climate.
These are important points to bear in mind when choosing your heating system.
When making your choice, it’s important to take into account the size and location of the space in order to obtain sufficient airflow to maintain the desired temperature.
Location is an important factor, as is the amount of sunlight the space receives.
Insulation
Insulation plays a crucial role. Insulated homes are more efficient at maintaining temperature and consume less energy. Good insulation therefore has an immediate influence on the efficiency of your system.

SEER
The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (also known as SEER) is an indicator that represents the amount of energy used by your heating system. A higher SEER means your air conditioner consumes less energy.
Number of BTUs
Here’s an estimate of the number of BTUs required, based on the surface area to be covered.
- 500 to 900 feet2 – 12,000 BTUs
- 900 to 1500 feet2 – 18 000 BTUs
- 1500 to 2000 feet2 – 24 000 BTUs
Central or wall-mounted
The wall-mounted heating system is ideal for homeowners who want to add a system to an existing home. It’s the most popular, economical and quickest solution.
Owners of multi-storey homes under construction are more likely to opt for a central heating system. It’s much easier to install air ducts in each room when the walls are already open. The central heating system remains the most efficient option, providing even heating for every room in the house and saving on electricity costs.
There’s another option for already-built homes: the multi-zone heating system. Multi-zone heating systems allow you to connect several wall diffusers to a single compressor to ensure a uniform temperature throughout your home.
As you can see, when choosing a heating system, there are many elements to consider. We can help you find the right option for your needs and budget.

Understand
The wall-mounted air conditioning system
The wall-mounted air conditioning system has two main units, the head (diffuser) and the compressor.
The head is the part fixed to the wall inside your home and the compressor is the unit located outside your home. Note that there are different sizes and power of compressors depending on the power required for the space to be air-conditioned.
Why choose a wall-mounted air conditioning system?
Wall-mounted air conditioning systems are often chosen by condos and homeowners for their quick installation and low cost. Compared to central air conditioning, virtually any home can accommodate this heating solution.
In comparison, to install a central heating system in a house that has already been built, it is necessary to install ventilation ducts through the walls of the house. Obviously, this solution requires major work.
This is why many homeowners opt for a wall-mounted heating system. We install the compressor on the outside and the ventilation head(s) on the inside walls. It is possible to install up to 3 wall units per compressor. In multi-story homes, it is recommended to have one unit per floor to ensure optimal performance and generate greater savings!
*Installation of a wall-mounted air conditioning system usually takes less than 3 hours.
Key Benefits:
- Lower operating costs
- Low maintenance
- Reduced carbon emissions
- Long life span
- Controls humidity in the home
- Fast heating
- Quiet 19 to 40 decibels indoors and 46 to 58 decibels outdoors.
What does maintenance of a wall-mounted air conditioning consist of? entail?
A poorly maintained system can consume up to 25% more electricity. That’s why it’s recommended to perform annual maintenance on the wall unit and the compressor.
The Freon is now illegal. What to do?
It is now illegal to import or produce Freon, the refrigerant gas used in thousands of air conditioning systems. If you have a Freon system, it is important to replace your compressor, as it will soon be obsolete. At DuraClim, all of our air conditioning systems run on Purron, a new gas authorized by the Canadian government.
Understand
The central air conditioning system
The central air conditioning system consists of a compressor located outside the home and air ducts leading to each room in your home.
The central air conditioning system remains one of the most efficient air conditioning systems available today. With an air outlet located in each room of your house, it allows air-conditioning uniformly and quickly in all the rooms of your house to offer you optimal comfort.
Why choose a central air conditioning system?
The central air conditioning system is often chosen by condo and home owners for its unparalleled efficiency, comfort and cost savings.
Because the air pipes are hidden through the walls, a single air outlet will be briefly visible in every room of your home.
More importantly, the central air conditioning system offers unparalleled efficiency! When it turns on, every room in the house is cooled to the same temperature simultaneously.
*Many properties already equipped with a central system have only one furnace. By adding a compressor to the outside of the house, it makes it easy to add air conditioning.
- Low maintenance
- Air conditioning sent to every room in the house through the duct system.
- Reduces carbon emissions
- Long life span
- Controls humidity in the house
- Fast air conditioning
- Quiet 19 to 40 decibels indoors and 46 to 58 decibels outdoors.
What's involved in maintaining a central air-conditioning system?
The maintenance of a central air conditioning system consists of cleaning or changing the filters, cleaning the air outlets, the ducts, and the compressor as well as checking the refrigeration pressure, the different electrical/mechanical parts, and the proper functioning of the system.
It is recommended to do 1 annual maintenance of your central air conditioning system in order to ensure its good functioning and to extend its life. A well-maintained system uses up to 25% less energy and improves air quality.
- Eliminates dust accumulation
- Eliminates bacteria build-up
- Increases air quality
- Prevents system breakdowns
- Increases system life span
- Reduce energy consumption by up to 25%.
Who should consider a central air conditioning system?
Central air conditioning systems are often prioritized for new construction of homes or houses, since the ducts must be run through the walls of the home. Since the walls are already open, it is easier to pass the ventilation ducts.
It is possible to add a central air conditioning system after construction, but this type of installation requires more work.
*If you already have ventilation ducts for your furnace or air exchanger, you can easily use the same ducts to install your central air conditioning.
Why is this the best solution if your home is already equipped with a furnace or air exchanger?
If your home is already ducted to distribute air from your furnace and/or air exchanger, you are one of the lucky ones! The installation of a central air conditioning system will be quite simple.
In your situation, since all the air ducts are already installed throughout your home, all you have to do is install the compressor outside and you have a central air conditioning system. Now, this is a little more complex than a hook-up, but you save yourself most of the work. Talk to a DuraClim consultant for more information and a free estimate.
