Which is the best multi-zone heating system for your home?
It’s important to know that not all units are equal in terms of power or quality when you’re looking to buy a multi-zone heating system. It’s crucial to choose a system that’s suited to Quebec’s climate.
Here are some important factors to consider when choosing a multi-zone heating system.
Location and size of space
When choosing a heating system, one of the most important factors to consider is the size of your space. You need to ensure that the system can propel enough air to maintain the temperature.
You also need to take into account the space’s exposure to the sun.
Insulation
Insulation is also important. Insulated homes require less energy, as they maintain their temperature more easily.

The SEER
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy efficiency Ratio. In French, the acronym is TRÉS for Taux de rendement Énergétique Saisonnier. The higher your SEER, the less energy your heating system will consume, which means more savings for you!
As you can see, there are many elements to consider when choosing your multi-zone heating unit. We’ll help you choose the best system for your particular needs.

Need a heating AND air conditioning system?
To understand
Multi-zone heating system
The multi-zone heating system consists of two main units: the compressor and the heads (diffusers).
The compressor is installed outside the house and communicates with the various wall-mounted diffusers inside. Depending on the space to be heated, a variety of compressor sizes and power ratings are available to ensure optimum comfort throughout the home.
Why choose a multi-zone heating system rather than a central system?
The multi-zone heating system is well appreciated by homeowners who want to ensure uniform comfort in a multi-storey home already built or under construction. In comparison, the multi-zone heating system is much more labor-intensive once the building has been constructed, since it requires opening up the walls to pass the air ducts.
Installing a multi-zone heating system involves mounting the heads (diffusers) on the inside walls of the home and the compressor on the outside. This solution is therefore less expensive for existing homes, and offers electricity savings. To ensure optimum comfort, we recommend installing 1 unit per floor you wish to heat.
*Installing a multi-zone heating system generally takes 1-2 hours per diffuser.
Key benefits:
- Low running costs
- Low maintenance
- Safe heating, so no risk of fire
- Reduces carbon emissions
- Long service life
- Controls humidity in the home
- Fast heating
- Quiet 19 and 40 decibels indoors and between 46 and 58 decibels outdoors.
Are multi-zone heating systems more economical than an oil system?
Many people still ask us this question. Yes, an electric heating system is much more economical than an oil system.
Although electric heating systems are economical all over America, they’re even more so in Quebec! As one of the world’s largest electricity manufacturers, we have access to the most advantageous rates, and therefore to the most attractive savings.
Let’s compare the annual cost of oil heating with that of an electric heating system:
Oil-fired heating
Fuel cost: $0.99/litre
Efficiency: 50%
Annual cost: $4405
Electric heating system (compressor)
Energy cost: $0.0668/kWh
Efficiency: 100%
Annual cost : $942
*Calculated from the Natural Resources Canada calculator
The electric heating system is a better option both economically and environmentally!
What's involved in maintaining a multi-zone heating system?
Maintenance of your multi-zone heating system is very important. It involves checking the various components and thoroughly cleaning the heads and compressor. Maintenance also eliminates bacteria and dust that can cause system breakdowns and pollute the air in your home.
We recommend at least one service per year to optimize the life of your multi-zone heating system and ensure clean air. Dust and pollen accumulate mainly in summer. That’s why we recommend that our customers carry out maintenance at the end of the summer season. That way, you can be sure of a clean, functional system to keep you warm all winter long!
Why install a multi-zone heating system if you already have electric baseboard heaters?
As you may have already noticed, many homes are equipped with both electric baseboard heaters and multi-zone heating systems.
The reason is simple! Electric baseboard heaters and wall-mounted systems complement each other.
- Each electric baseboard heater consumes 2.5 kW/h. On average, a floor has 5 electric baseboard heaters, so for 2 floors 25 kW/h are required to heat the 2 floors.
- Each wall unit consumes 2.5 kW/h. On average, a floor has only one wall unit, and therefore requires 5 kW/h to heat the 2 floors.
So why not always heat with your multi-zone system?
Depending on the quality of the heating system you have, the compressor is capable of heating down to around -25 degrees Celsius. When the actual temperature* exceeds the limit, the electric baseboard heaters take over.
So 95% of winter days will be heated with your wall-mounted system, for an energy consumption of just 5 kW/h compared with 25 kW/h without the system.
The result: substantial savings on your electricity bill.
*Real temperature :the real temperature is the temperature without the humidex factor. It may well feel like -32 degrees, but the actual temperature is -25 degrees. In our example, the compressor would still be working.
